BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA — Eleven antimining activists arrested during a police dispersal in Kasibu have launched an appeal for financial assistance to cover bail costs following their detention on August 28.
Antimining leader Florentino Daynos submitted the appeal on behalf of the group, which has been challenging mining operations in the Nueva Vizcaya municipality. The activists were taken into custody when police moved to disband a human barricade established as part of their protest efforts.
One of the 11 detainees required hospitalization following the dispersal, according to accounts from the antimining movement. The group faces legal proceedings related to the confrontation, with bail requirements creating a financial burden for the largely rural community members involved in the protest action.
The arrests underscore ongoing tensions between local communities and mining interests in the region, with antimining groups continuing to mobilize against extraction projects they argue threaten environmental and water resources.
