136 mountaineers and trekkers stranded in Uttarkashi by heavy snow

A total of 136 mountaineers and trekkers are stranded in the high-altitude areas of Uttarkashi district following heavy snowfall and incessant rainfall across the region. The adverse weather conditions have forced rescue teams into action to ensure the safety of those trapped in the Himalayan terrain.

Coordinated rescue efforts have been initiated by a joint task force comprising the district administration, forest department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police personnel, and disaster management authorities. Teams are working to locate and evacuate the stranded individuals from their current positions in the mountainous regions.

Beyond the immediate rescue situation, the severe weather has also disrupted the Chardham pilgrimage route, one of the region's most important spiritual circuits. The combination of snow and rain has made road conditions treacherous, affecting both the movement of pilgrims and regular traffic across the mountain passes.

The Uttarkashi administration has not provided a timeline for when conditions might improve sufficiently to resume normal operations on the pilgrimage routes. Authorities continue monitoring weather forecasts while prioritising the safe evacuation of those currently stranded in the high-altitude zones.
