15,000 Singapore taxpayers hit by NSman relief miscalculation error

Around 15,000 Singapore taxpayers have been affected by an error in the Ministry of Defence's system that resulted in incorrect National Serviceman (NSman) tax relief calculations, authorities confirmed. The discrepancies in tax relief amounts have prompted a review and correction of the affected returns.
According to officials, the majority of impacted taxpayers will see either an upward or downward adjustment of less than S$200 to their tax positions. This suggests that while the error was widespread, its financial impact on individual taxpayers remained relatively modest.
The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) and MINDEF are working to rectify the records and notify affected taxpayers of the corrections. Those impacted are expected to receive details of the adjustments to their NSman tax relief entitlements.
The NSman tax relief is a benefit extended to National Servicemen to recognise their service obligations. The system error highlights the importance of regular audits in processing large-scale tax relief calculations across government databases.
