Law enforcement agencies conducted the Saturday operations in Surigao City as part of an intensified campaign against unlicensed mining operations that damage the environment and deplete natural resources. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources coordinated the action through its Environmental Law Enforcement and Protection Service and Mines and Geosciences Bureau, working alongside Philippine National Police units.
The apprehension of eight foreign nationals underscores concerns over organized illegal mining networks that often involve international operators. Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding the specific mining operations targeted or the location of the illegal activities within Surigao City.
The crackdown reflects renewed government efforts to combat illegal mining, which has become increasingly prevalent in resource-rich areas of Mindanao and elsewhere in the Philippines. Illegal mining operations pose significant environmental hazards, including water pollution, deforestation, and soil degradation, while depriving the government of legitimate mining revenues.
Authorities are expected to file appropriate charges against those arrested. The DENR and Philippine National Police have pledged to continue joint enforcement operations against illegal mining throughout the region.
