KUALA LUMPUR — The Home Ministry has disclosed that 199 index crime cases have been linked to Myanmar refugees across Malaysia, with Selangor recording the largest concentration of such incidents.

Data released by the ministry showed that Selangor accounted for 58 cases, significantly higher than other states, highlighting the scale of crime involving the refugee population in the country's most populous state.

Index crimes typically refer to serious offences including theft, robbery, burglary, and violent crimes that are tracked as key indicators of public safety. The disclosure comes amid ongoing concerns about crime rates in areas with high concentrations of refugee populations.

The findings underscore the challenges faced by Malaysian authorities in managing law and order within refugee communities while addressing the broader security concerns of host communities. The Home Ministry's data provides the most comprehensive overview to date of criminal activity linked to the Myanmar refugee population in Malaysia.

Malaysia is home to a significant number of Myanmar refugees and migrants, particularly Rohingya populations who have arrived in recent years fleeing persecution and conflict in Myanmar.
