KUALA LUMPUR — The 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) Asset Recovery Taskforce has thrown its support behind a damages claim valued at approximately S$1 billion against DBS Bank, citing the lender's handling of accounts connected to controversial financier Jho Low.

The taskforce's endorsement represents a significant development in Malaysia's prolonged attempt to recoup billions lost through the 1MDB scandal, one of the world's largest financial frauds. Jho Low, a key figure in the scheme, remains at large after allegedly orchestrating the massive misappropriation of state funds.

The claim centres on DBS's management of banking facilities that facilitated the movement of illicit funds. Financial regulators and law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions have scrutinised the bank's role in the affair, with authorities contending that inadequate due diligence allowed suspicious transactions to proceed.

1MDB, a sovereign wealth fund established in 2009, lost an estimated US$4.5 billion through fraud and embezzlement. Malaysian authorities have intensified recovery efforts in recent years, pursuing civil and criminal actions against individuals and institutions implicated in the scandal.

The DBS claim follows similar legal actions launched against other financial institutions accused of facilitating the movement of 1MDB funds. The outcome could influence pending cases in other jurisdictions, including Singapore and the United States.
