23 Malaysian areas record unhealthy air quality; southern Peninsula hit hardest

Twenty-three areas across Malaysia registered unhealthy air quality levels, signalling a broader air pollution challenge affecting the nation's environmental conditions. The southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia emerged as the most severely affected zones, with multiple hotspots concentrated in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

Kota Tinggi topped the pollution rankings with an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 170, classified as unhealthy. Pasir Gudang followed closely at 169, while Seremban recorded 166. Nilai and Pengerang both registered 164, rounding out the five most polluted areas monitored.

The widespread unhealthy air quality readings underscored ongoing air pollution challenges in the region. Authorities typically recommend that vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions limit outdoor activities when API levels breach the unhealthy threshold of 150 and above.

The concentration of high pollution readings in Johor and surrounding districts reflects localised air quality issues that may stem from industrial activities, vehicular emissions, or transboundary haze. Continued monitoring and enforcement of air quality standards remain essential as Malaysia navigates its environmental responsibilities.
