A comprehensive water supply infrastructure project worth ₹3,108 crore has been launched to strengthen and equalize drinking water distribution across the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) region. The initiative involves creating a ring main pipeline system that will interconnect all nine existing water treatment facilities, enabling seamless water flow across the municipal area.
The project encompasses the laying of 91.2 kilometres of interconnected pipelines designed to form an integrated network. This strategic infrastructure development will facilitate the movement of treated water from multiple treatment plants, reducing dependency on any single facility and enhancing distribution efficiency across the service area.
Beyond pipeline construction, the project includes installation of advanced monitoring instruments at treatment plants and distribution stations. These systems will measure critical parameters including water pressure, flow rates, and quality metrics, enabling real-time monitoring and management of the water supply network.
The ring main pipeline approach represents a modern approach to urban water management, addressing supply inconsistencies by creating redundancy in the distribution system. Officials expect the interconnected network will improve service reliability for residents across the GCC area and ensure more equitable access to treated drinking water throughout the city.
