34 U.S. Peace Corps volunteers arrive in Sri Lanka for two-year service
A new cohort of American Peace Corps trainees has landed in Sri Lanka to begin an intensive preparation programme ahead of their official deployment. The volunteers will spend the coming months developing language skills and cultural competency before commencing their two-year service assignments across the island.

Thirty-four Peace Corps trainee volunteers from the United States arrived in Sri Lanka this week to launch their service journey, marking a fresh commitment to bilateral educational and developmental cooperation between the two nations.
Following their arrival, the American volunteers will undertake a comprehensive training regimen spanning several months. The programme encompasses intensive instruction in either Sinhala or Tamil, immersion in Sri Lankan culture and customs, and specialised preparation in English-language teaching methodology.
The volunteers are scheduled to take the Peace Corps Pledge of Service in November, formalising their commitment to a two-year posting. Upon swearing in, they will disperse to communities across Sri Lanka where they will work on education and development initiatives aligned with national priorities.
The Peace Corps, a United States government agency established in 1961, operates volunteer programmes in numerous countries. The organisation emphasises cross-cultural exchange and grassroots development work, with volunteers typically working in education, health, and community development sectors.
