35 Malaysian areas record unhealthy air quality, Batu Pahat worst hit

Air quality monitoring data shows that Batu Pahat in Johor has emerged as the most polluted area, recording an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 191, which falls into the unhealthy category. The situation highlights growing concerns about air pollution across multiple regions in the country.

Several other hotspot areas have reported elevated API readings, indicating widespread air quality deterioration. Johan Setia posted an index of 189, while both Cheras and Nilai registered 188. Putrajaya recorded 186, Seremban 181, and Shah Alam 180, all signalling unhealthy air conditions that may affect public health.

With 35 areas now experiencing substandard air quality, health officials and environmental agencies are likely to monitor the situation closely. Residents in affected areas, particularly those with respiratory conditions, elderly persons, and children, are typically advised to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers indoors.

The spike in unhealthy readings underscores the ongoing challenges Malaysia faces with air pollution management, particularly during certain seasons when transboundary haze and local emissions converge to degrade air quality across the region.
