36 Malaysian areas record unhealthy air quality, Pasir Gudang worst hit

Air quality deteriorated significantly across Malaysia, with 36 areas documenting unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels, according to latest monitoring data. The industrial district of Pasir Gudang in Johor experienced the most severe readings, emerging as the worst-affected location during the measurement period.

Several other hotspots were identified across the country. Within Johor, the areas of Segamat and Larkin joined Pasir Gudang in recording concerning pollution levels. Additional problem areas included Seremban in Negeri Sembilan and Johan Setia in Selangor, indicating the pollution episode was not confined to a single state or region.

The widespread nature of the unhealthy readings suggests atmospheric conditions conducive to pollutant accumulation across a broad geographic area. Authorities typically issue health advisories when API levels reach unhealthy thresholds, recommending vulnerable populations limit outdoor activities and use protective equipment.

The simultaneous recording of poor air quality across multiple districts underscores ongoing challenges in managing air pollution in Malaysia's industrial and urban centres, particularly during periods when meteorological conditions favour pollutant concentration.
