KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has confirmed that a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centred in North Sumatra could potentially be felt across western peninsular Malaysia, following the seismic event detected earlier this week.

The moderate-strength quake, originating from the Indonesian region, falls within the range capable of producing noticeable ground movement across the maritime region. MetMalaysia has advised residents in western areas of Peninsular Malaysia to remain alert for any tremors, though no immediate damage or casualties have been reported.

Indonesia, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, regularly experiences seismic activity. The proximity of North Sumatra to Malaysia's western coast means significant earthquakes in the region can occasionally transmit vibrations across the border, particularly in states closer to the Strait of Malacca.

MetMalaysia continues to monitor seismic activity in the region and has urged the public to report any unusual ground movements or tremors to the department. The agency maintains earthquake monitoring systems throughout Malaysia to track regional geological activity and provide early alerts when necessary.
