52 Singaporeans arrested in China over alleged Nanning pyramid scheme

The 52 Singaporeans were arrested in connection with pyramid scheme activities operating in Nanning, the capital of China's Guangxi region, according to law enforcement disclosures. Investigators said the scheme employed a range of sophisticated lures to attract participants, including complimentary dinners, discounted manicure services priced at S$8, and access to condominium properties, which were used as incentives to encourage recruitment and financial investment.

The operation exemplifies the growing sophistication of cross-border financial fraud targeting Southeast Asian nationals. Authorities did not disclose the total number of victims or the financial scale of the alleged scheme at the time of the arrests.

The incident underscores persistent risks facing Singaporeans and other regional nationals involved in investment schemes operated in mainland China. Overseas Chinese nationals and regional migrants have previously fallen victim to similar operations that exploited lifestyle aspirations and promises of lucrative returns.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued a statement regarding consular assistance for the detained nationals. The case remains under investigation by Chinese authorities.
