More than 7.5 million people across the Philippines have been impacted by the combined effects of tropical cyclones Luis, Maymay, and Neneng, along with the southwest monsoon locally referred to as "habagat," the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Sunday.
The agency provided the updated figures in its latest situation report dated August 23, marking a significant increase in the number of affected residents. The data underscores the widespread nature of the weather disturbances that have swept across multiple regions of the archipelago over recent weeks.
The consecutive tropical cyclones and prolonged monsoon conditions have triggered flooding, landslides, and storm surge in vulnerable areas, forcing evacuations and straining local government response capacity. The NDRRMC has maintained its disaster alert status as monitoring continues for additional weather systems. Relief agencies are coordinating with local government units to assess damage, provide humanitarian assistance, and support recovery efforts in the hardest-hit provinces.
