750-kg Indian gaur freed from poacher's snare in Andhra Pradesh

A 750-kilogram Indian gaur has been rescued from a snare trap laid by poachers in the eco-sensitive zone of Papikonda National Park in Andhra Pradesh's Khammam district. The large bovine, one of Asia's heaviest wild cattle species, was freed by a coordinated team of wildlife officials and veterinarians who responded to reports of the animal's entrapment.

The gaur sustained injuries from the snare during its capture and subsequent struggle to escape. Following its rescue, the animal was transported to the Animal Rescue Centre in Visakhapatnam, where it is undergoing medical treatment for its wounds. Veterinary specialists are monitoring its condition closely to ensure a full recovery.

The incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by illegal hunting in India's protected forest areas. Gaurs, listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, face significant poaching pressure due to habitat loss and human encroachment. Papikonda National Park, located in the Eastern Ghats, serves as a critical refuge for various endangered species including gaurs, leopards, and several primate populations.

State wildlife authorities have intensified anti-poaching patrols in the region and urged local communities to report any suspicious activity. Officials are investigating the source of the snare and working to apprehend those responsible for setting it.
