88 local authorities recognised under Malaysia's smart city programme

PUTRAJAYA — A total of 88 local authorities (PBTs) across Malaysia have achieved official recognition under the country's smart city programme since its inception in 2023, the Housing Ministry announced on Monday.

The recognition reflects growing efforts by municipal governments to embrace digital transformation and sustainable urban planning strategies. Local authorities receiving recognition have demonstrated commitment to implementing smart city frameworks that integrate technology with urban governance and public services.

The smart city programme forms part of Malaysia's broader national agenda to modernise urban development and enhance the quality of life in municipalities. The initiative encourages local authorities to adopt innovative solutions in areas including waste management, traffic management, public safety, and citizen engagement platforms.

The ministry's recognition scheme provides a structured pathway for PBTs to transition towards smart city status, with technical support and capacity building offered to participating authorities. Officials have indicated that the programme will continue expanding to encompass additional local authorities in the coming years.

The initiative aligns with Malaysia's commitment to sustainable development goals and positions the country as a regional leader in smart urban development practices.
