Aadhaar gears up to handle 300 million daily authentications

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing its Aadhaar infrastructure to process 300 million authentications daily, according to officials overseeing the world's largest biometric identity programme. The planned capacity expansion reflects growing reliance on Aadhaar for digital transactions, financial services and government benefits delivery across the country.

Beyond immediate scaling efforts, UIDAI is developing a comprehensive 10-year technology roadmap designed to future-proof the system against emerging security threats. The strategic plan incorporates post-quantum cryptography—encryption standards being developed to withstand potential attacks from quantum computers—alongside AI-powered mechanisms for detecting and preventing fraudulent transactions.

The roadmap also explores extending Aadhaar authentication capabilities beyond India's borders, potentially enabling diaspora Indians and international users to leverage the digital identity system. Such expansion could establish Aadhaar as a globally recognised identity credential while maintaining the system's core security architecture.

These developments underscore UIDAI's commitment to maintaining Aadhaar as a robust, scalable and secure platform as digital authentication becomes increasingly central to India's economic and administrative infrastructure.
