AAIB cites training, audit gaps in VSR Ventures Learjet accident

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has flagged critical deficiencies in the safety management systems of VSR Ventures following its investigation into the Learjet crash that occurred near Mumbai last year. According to the AAIB's findings, the operator had failed to maintain adequate pilot training records and had not conducted sufficient internal audits to ensure compliance with aviation regulations. These systemic lapses in operational oversight raised questions about the company's adherence to safety protocols mandated by India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The investigation revealed that VSR Ventures had not implemented robust mechanisms to track and verify pilot qualifications and training currency. The absence of comprehensive record-keeping systems meant that critical information about crew competency and flight hours could not be reliably verified. Additionally, the AAIB found that the operator's internal audit processes were insufficient to identify and correct these shortcomings before the accident occurred.

The AAIB's report underscores ongoing concerns about safety management practices among some private aviation operators in India. The authority's recommendations are expected to prompt regulatory reviews and potential enforcement actions to strengthen oversight of similar operators. The findings come as India's aviation sector continues to expand, with increasing numbers of charter and business aviation flights operating across the country.
