Abante seeks NBI help over cyberlibel complaint against vloggers

MANILA – Manila 6th District Representative Bienvenido "Benny" Abante visited the National Bureau of Investigation on Friday to seek assistance in preparing a potential cyberlibel complaint against vloggers, citing what he described as damaging allegations published online.

Abante met with NBI Director Melvin Matibag to discuss the matter, according to reports. The congressman characterized the online posts as "below-the-belt" attacks, signaling his frustration with the nature of the allegations.

The move represents an escalation in Abante's response to the online criticism, with the lawmaker now enlisting the support of the country's premier investigative agency. The NBI typically handles cases involving violations of the Cybercrime Prevention Act, including cyberlibel charges.

Abante's approach mirrors actions taken by other public officials facing online criticism, though cyberlibel cases have remained contentious due to debates over free speech protections. The outcome of his consultation with the NBI will determine whether formal charges will be filed against the vloggers in question.
