Abdullah dares BJP to table UCC Bill in Parliament

Senior National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Monday challenged the BJP to bring a Uniform Civil Code bill before Parliament, casting doubt on the party's commitment to the contentious proposal.

Abdullah suggested that the BJP's reluctance to formally introduce such legislation stems from resistance within its own political alliance. "The way their own allies are not in favour of UCC, I don't think they will be able to get it passed in Parliament. That is perhaps why they are taking this route," he said, implying the party was relying on alternative means to push the agenda rather than parliamentary action.

The Uniform Civil Code, which would replace personal laws of different religions with a common civil code, has long been a contentious issue in Indian politics. The BJP has made the UCC a key part of its ideological agenda, though implementation remains challenging given India's constitutional provisions protecting religious minorities' personal law rights.

Abdullah's remarks come amid ongoing political debate over the proposal, with various opposition parties and regional allies expressing reservations about its feasibility and constitutional implications.
