Abhay Singh's homecoming lacked the fanfare typically reserved for medal-winning athletes. The 28-year-old squash player arrived at the airport with a subdued demeanor that reflected his conflicted emotions about his Asian Games campaign, despite bringing back two medals from the continental competition.
While Singh's individual silver represented a significant personal achievement—making him only the second Indian man to claim an individual squash medal at the Asian Games—his satisfaction was tempered by the team event's outcome. The men's squad finished with bronze, a result Singh viewed as a missed opportunity to defend the gold medal secured at the previous Asian Games.
"The individual result was understandable given the caliber of my opponent," Singh told reporters. "However, I remain quite disappointed with our team performance. We possessed the depth and quality necessary to win gold, but sport does not always work out as expected."
The 28-year-old acknowledged the unpredictability inherent in competitive sports while maintaining conviction in the team's capabilities. "Hopefully, we can return stronger and achieve better results in future competitions," he added, signaling his commitment to addressing the squad's shortcomings.
