The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has complained to Jawaharlal Nehru University authorities over alleged graffiti bearing slogans reading 'Free Umar Khalid' and 'Long Live Naxalbari' on campus walls. The student organisation's complaint seeks swift administrative action to remove the markings and identify those responsible. The ABVP statement indicated that university authorities have been formally notified of the matter for investigation and remedial steps.
The incident at JNU follows similar reports from Jamia Millia Islamia University just two days prior, where comparable slogans were allegedly discovered on institutional premises. These consecutive occurrences have intensified concerns among certain student groups regarding the ideological environment on Delhi's major campuses.
Umar Khalid, a former JNU student, remains in custody facing charges related to alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi communal violence. The reference to Naxalbari, the site of a peasant uprising in West Bengal in 1967 that influenced communist movements across India, has been interpreted by the ABVP as reflecting anti-establishment sentiment on campus.
JNU administration has not yet issued a public statement regarding the complaint or any investigation into the alleged slogans. The incident reflects ongoing tensions between different student organisations at Indian universities over campus expression and ideological representation.
