Representatives of a civil society coalition approached Parliament Street police station Monday to formally request permission for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar, signalling their intent to intensify pressure if the authorities do not grant approval promptly.
"We are seeking a date from Delhi Police to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar," said coalition leader Ashutosh Ranka in a statement to journalists outside the police station. "If they do not provide a date within 24 hours, we will issue a fresh call for action." The move reflects growing frustration among activist groups over restrictions they contend have been imposed without adequate justification.
The police presence was heightened during the activists' visit, with authorities cordoning off the road outside the station and issuing public announcements urging compliance with existing security orders and prohibitory measures. Officials appealed to residents and visitors to avoid unauthorised gatherings.
The coalition has also criticised the broader security arrangements in Delhi, arguing they have created unnecessary disruptions for residents and businesses amid the approaching festival season. The demonstration of police restrictions on Monday underscored the heightened security environment in the national capital.
