Acupuncture Practitioner Faces Sentencing in Rs. 47.6 Million Fraud Case

The Nugegoda Additional Magistrate's Court has scheduled sentencing for November 20 in the case against acupuncture practitioner Prasad Deshapriya, who stands accused of defrauding a local businessman through fraudulent cheques. Magistrate Sanjaya Lakmal Jayasinghe announced the sentencing date on October 28 following proceedings in the matter.

Deshapriya faces charges spanning four separate cases related to the alleged issuance of dishonoured cheques valued at Rs. 47.6 million. The practitioner has already been convicted in two of the cases brought against him, establishing guilt on multiple counts of fraud.

The criminal proceedings centre on allegations that Deshapriya issued cheques to the businessman that were subsequently dishonoured when presented for payment. The substantial sum involved has drawn significant attention to the case, highlighting concerns over financial fraud involving foreign nationals operating in Sri Lanka.

The November 20 sentencing hearing will determine the penalties to be imposed on Deshapriya following his convictions. Legal proceedings in the remaining cases are expected to continue through the court system.
