The Centre's flagship coal gasification programme has garnered significant industry interest, with seven applications submitted during the first bidding cycle for projects worth approximately ₹37,500 crore. Adani Group emerged as the leading participant, placing bids for three ventures, underscoring the conglomerate's commitment to India's energy transition goals.
Four of the seven applications specifically target urea production through coal gasification technology, reflecting strong domestic demand for the fertiliser sector. Urea manufacturing represents a critical focus area as India seeks to reduce dependence on imports while leveraging domestic coal reserves. The remaining proposals concentrate on syngas production and direct reduced iron (DRI) manufacturing, diversifying the scheme's industrial applications.
The coal gasification scheme forms part of India's broader strategy to unlock value from low-grade coal reserves while supporting the transition to cleaner energy practices. By converting coal into chemical feedstocks and industrial gases, the initiative aims to enhance manufacturing competitiveness and create employment opportunities across multiple sectors.
Industry analysts view the healthy response rate as validation of the scheme's viability and economic incentives. The bidding round is expected to culminate in project approvals that will establish production capacity across fertiliser, chemical, and metal manufacturing segments. Implementation of these projects could substantially reshape India's industrial landscape while optimising domestic coal utilisation.
