ADB flags severe climate risks threatening Cambodia's key economic sectors

The Asian Development Bank's latest Asia-Pacific Climate Outlook warns of escalating climate risks that will fundamentally challenge Cambodia's economic stability in the coming decades. Rising sea levels, extreme weather events and changing precipitation patterns are expected to intensify pressure on the country's vulnerable coastal infrastructure and resource-dependent industries.

Cambodia's fishing sector, a cornerstone of rural livelihoods and export earnings, faces particular vulnerability to climate disruption. Port operations in key trading hubs could face extended disruptions from severe weather, threatening the country's foreign trade competitiveness. The tourism industry, another major revenue source, may also suffer as climate impacts alter the country's natural and cultural attractions.

In response to mounting climate threats, Cambodia is actively seeking support from international partners. The government has requested assistance from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to bolster early warning systems for climate-related disasters, aiming to improve preparedness and reduce economic losses.

Cambodia has also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of broader efforts to address climate change. These steps reflect growing recognition among policymakers that climate adaptation and mitigation strategies are essential for protecting the country's long-term economic prospects and safeguarding vulnerable populations from intensifying environmental pressures.
