The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed $100 million in results-based financing to support Sri Lanka's overhaul of its technical and vocational education and training (TVET) infrastructure. The investment, delivered through the Skills Development System Transformation Program, is designed to strengthen the country's human capital and drive sustainable economic growth.

The ADB initiative will work alongside government efforts to modernize the TVET landscape, ensuring that training programmes align with current and emerging industry requirements. The focus on skills development is intended to enhance employability prospects for young Sri Lankans while addressing skills gaps that have constrained the country's competitiveness in regional and global markets.

The results-based structure of the loan ties disbursements to measurable outcomes, incentivizing the government to demonstrate concrete progress in expanding access to quality vocational training and improving employment outcomes for programme participants. This approach is expected to encourage efficient implementation and accountability throughout the initiative.

The programme reflects growing recognition across South Asia of the critical role that technical skills training plays in enabling inclusive growth and reducing youth unemployment. For Sri Lanka, which faces demographic pressures and significant youth workforce challenges, modernizing its vocational education system is seen as essential to diversifying the economy and building resilience.
