Adult dugong found dead in Antique as juvenile rescued nearby

ILOILO CITY — An adult dugong was discovered dead along the shoreline of Barangay Aras-Asan in Sebaste, Antique on Monday, marking a tragic turn in a region where the threatened marine mammal has become increasingly rare.

The discovery came just one day after local residents in nearby Caluya town managed to rescue a juvenile dugong that had become stranded in the area. The young animal was successfully returned to deeper waters following the intervention of community members and local authorities.

Officials examined the carcass of the adult dugong and coordinated efforts to determine the circumstances of its death. The incident underscores the vulnerability of dugong populations in Philippine waters, where these gentle herbivores face multiple threats including accidental fishing net entanglement, boat strikes, and habitat degradation.

Dugongs, which are listed as vulnerable to extinction by international conservation bodies, inhabit shallow coastal waters throughout Southeast Asia. The Philippines remains one of the species' important strongholds, though sightings have declined significantly over recent decades due to human-related pressures.
