ILOILO CITY — An adult dugong was discovered dead along the shoreline of Barangay Aras-Asan in Sebaste town on Monday, authorities said. The marine mammal's death comes just a day after local residents in the province successfully aided a stranded juvenile dugong in returning to the sea.
The dugong, scientifically known as Dugong dugon, is a large marine herbivore classified as vulnerable to extinction. The species is protected under Philippine law due to declining populations across its range in Southeast Asian waters.
The circumstances surrounding the adult dugong's death remained under investigation. Local officials did not immediately specify whether the animal had been ill, injured, or affected by other causes.
