Advocacy group challenges Medanta chief's role in pharma panel

An advocacy group representing consumer interests has raised concerns about the composition of a government panel tasked with reviewing marketing practices in the pharmaceutical sector. In a formal representation to the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the organisation questioned the participation of Naresh Trehan, chairman of Medanta Healthcare, arguing that his position at a major healthcare provider creates potential conflicts of interest.

The group contended that Trehan's dual role as both a leading figure in private healthcare delivery and a panellist examining pharma marketing standards could compromise the panel's independence and objectivity. Such arrangements risk undermining the credibility of recommendations aimed at regulating industry conduct, the advocates argued.

The representation requests that the government replace Trehan with a member whose background ensures freedom from potential conflicts of interest. The move reflects growing scrutiny over institutional appointments in regulatory matters, particularly in sectors where commercial interests intersect with public health policy.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has not yet responded to the representation. The panel's ongoing review is expected to shape future guidelines governing how pharmaceutical companies market and promote medicines to healthcare professionals and consumers across India.
