The Eastern Congo Initiative has announced a major milestone in its humanitarian operations, with programmes now delivering over 100 million litres of clean water annually across the Democratic Republic of Congo. The achievement underscores the organisation's evolution from a nascent advocacy effort to a substantial development player in one of Africa's most challenging regions.
Since its establishment in 2010, the initiative has prioritised sustainable development solutions that address critical infrastructure gaps in eastern Congo. Access to clean water remains a fundamental challenge across much of the region, with millions lacking reliable supply. The initiative's expansion reflects both increased funding and refined operational strategies aimed at maximising community benefit.
Beyond water provision, the organisation has facilitated healthcare access for over 400,000 individuals, establishing itself as a multifaceted development actor. The initiative's approach centres on community-driven problem solving, with local partnerships forming the backbone of service delivery. This model has proven effective in contexts where traditional humanitarian approaches face logistical and security constraints.
Asili, the initiative's social enterprise arm, plays a central role in achieving sustainability across programmes. Rather than relying solely on donor funding, the model emphasises revenue generation and local economic engagement, positioning beneficiary communities as active participants in their own development. This approach represents a broader shift within the development sector towards self-sustaining interventions.
