KUANTAN — A 55-year-old Afghan tourist died after losing consciousness during a Discovery Scuba Diving (DSD) activity near Tioman Island on Tuesday, authorities said. The man was participating in a beginner-level scuba diving programme when he experienced difficulties underwater. He was brought to the surface by diving instructors but was pronounced dead shortly after.
Emergency services responded to the incident, which occurred off the coast of the popular island destination in Pahang. Local authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances of the death. The DSD programme is a recreational diving certification course designed to introduce beginners to underwater diving with professional supervision.
Tioman Island, located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is one of the country's premier diving destinations, attracting international visitors seeking underwater exploration and marine experiences. The incident has raised questions about safety protocols at the diving facility involved.
Authorities have not yet released the final findings of their investigation, though preliminary reports suggest the tourist may have experienced a medical emergency while submerged. The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with water-based recreational activities, particularly for individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
