African swine fever confirmed in Palawan; containment efforts underway

CALAPAN CITY — Philippine agriculture officials have confirmed an outbreak of African swine fever in Barangay Concepcion, Agutaya town in Palawan province, marking another detection of the highly contagious animal disease in the region.

The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Animal Industry made the confirmation on Friday, with the provincial government announcing the case to local stakeholders. The discovery has prompted immediate coordination among the Provincial ASF Task Force, Agutaya municipal government and other concerned agencies to contain the outbreak.

African swine fever, a viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, has presented significant challenges to the livestock industry across the Philippines. The disease is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated feed and poses a severe risk to commercial and backyard pig operations if left unchecked.

Local authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the extent of the outbreak or the number of affected animals.
