Afternoon thundershowers expected across Sri Lanka from today
The Department of Meteorology has forecast widespread showers and thunderstorms across most of the island from early afternoon onwards. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions against potential weather-related hazards.

Atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for afternoon thundershowers across the majority of Sri Lanka as of Wednesday, 1 October 2026, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The weather system is expected to develop from early afternoon, with showers and thunderstorms likely to affect most parts of the island. The meteorological office issued the forecast at 5:30 a.m., giving residents several hours to prepare for the expected weather conditions.
The Department of Meteorology has urged the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage and disruptions caused by temporary localized strong winds and heavy rainfall that may accompany the thundershowers.
Residents in affected areas are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak weather activity, and remain alert to weather updates as the day progresses.
