KUALA LUMPUR — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has proposed delaying the implementation of a house arrest order for Datuk Seri Najib Razak pending resolution of outstanding legal questions, according to court filings submitted on Wednesday.
The recommendation comes as Najib's legal team seeks clarification on aspects of the sentencing order handed down by the High Court. The AGC's position suggests the prosecution does not oppose a temporary stay of the house arrest provision while the matter undergoes further legal review.
Najib, who served as Prime Minister from 2009 to 2018, was convicted in July 2023 on charges related to the misappropriation of funds linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal. His legal representatives have indicated they intend to pursue appeals on multiple grounds.
The development marks a procedural development in a case that has drawn significant public attention due to Najib's former high office and the magnitude of funds involved. The court is expected to consider the AGC's recommendation in determining whether to grant the requested postponement.
No date has been set for the next hearing on this matter.
