Ageing pipe joint failure blamed for Bayan Baru road cave-in

The cave-in that affected a main road in Bayan Baru resulted from a joint failure in an ageing water supply pipeline, the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has confirmed. The affected pipe, measuring 300mm in diameter, lies approximately 4 metres below the surface and has been operational for over 30 years. Infrastructure experts attribute the structural failure to the deterioration of the pipe joint, which gave way under pressure and ground conditions. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the condition of utility infrastructure in older residential areas across the state. Authorities have not yet announced plans for pipeline replacement or preventive maintenance schedules for similar ageing conduits in the vicinity. Repairs to the damaged section are expected to commence following safety assessments of the affected road section.
