CALAPAN CITY — A 67-year-old former militia member associated with a communist rebel organization surrendered to authorities in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, on Friday, police reported. The individual, a married government employee and farmer, had previously served with the Milisyang Bayan unit of a communist terrorist group's regional command.
The surrender took place without incident as the man voluntarily presented himself to police in the municipality. His decision to abandon his affiliation with the armed group marks another instance of combatants leaving rebel organizations in the region.
Police officials documented the surrender and are conducting further interviews with the former militia member. The circumstances that prompted his decision to turn himself in were not immediately disclosed. Authorities have not provided details regarding potential charges or the status of his case as it moves through official channels.
The surrender is consistent with ongoing efforts by security forces and civilian authorities to encourage members of communist rebel groups to lay down arms and reintegrate into civilian society. The Philippines has maintained a decades-long campaign against communist insurgent movements operating across various regions of the archipelago.
