The employment prospects of Agniveers—short-service commissioned officers in the Indian armed forces—have emerged as a political pressure point in Punjab ahead of upcoming polls, with concerns mounting over delayed implementation of promised job placements.
Under a draft rehabilitation policy, the government has proposed reserving 10 per cent of police constable positions and 20 per cent of office guard posts for Agniveers upon their discharge from service. However, these provisions remain unfinalized, leaving thousands of former military personnel without clarity on their civilian career trajectories.
The uncertainty has resonated particularly in Punjab, a state with significant military recruitment and deep-rooted links to defense services. Political parties have seized upon the issue, with criticism directed at delays in operationalizing the reservation scheme and concerns about whether the proposed quotas will adequately accommodate the growing number of Agniveers completing their service terms.
Agniveer recruitment, launched in 2022 as a cost-effective military staffing model, envisioned limited-term service contracts with streamlined post-retirement employment options. The disconnect between recruitment promises and actual implementation has fueled frustration among discharged personnel and their families.
Government officials have indicated that state-level coordination remains underway to finalize the rehabilitation framework, though no definitive timeline for implementation has been announced.
