Agusan del Sur battles dengue crisis as cases surge past 2,500

San Francisco, Agusan del Sur — Health officials in Agusan del Sur are intensifying efforts to contain a dengue outbreak that has escalated significantly in recent weeks, with confirmed cases now exceeding 2,500 and fatalities reaching 16 since the start of the year.

The provincial government formally declared the province under a dengue outbreak status two weeks ago, triggering coordinated public health interventions across multiple sectors. Among the most visible responses, public schools have begun implementing emergency mosquito-control measures in a bid to reduce transmission within educational facilities where young people gather.

Children and adolescents have emerged as disproportionately affected by the outbreak, according to local health data. The vulnerability of younger populations to dengue in the province has prompted schools to prioritize environmental sanitation and vector control operations on campus grounds.

The outbreak comes amid heightened dengue activity across the Philippines during the warmer months. Provincial health authorities are coordinating with municipal governments to expand surveillance, enhance public awareness campaigns, and ensure adequate medical resources to manage severe cases and prevent further deaths.
