SAN FRANCISCO, AGUSAN DEL SUR — Health authorities in Agusan del Sur are intensifying efforts to combat a mounting dengue epidemic that has claimed 20 lives over the past 10 months, with the mosquito-borne illness showing no signs of slowing.
The province recorded two deaths between Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, underscoring the accelerating pace of the outbreak. The fatality count represents a significant increase from the 14 deaths initially documented, reflecting a troubling trend in infection rates across the region.
Health officials have expressed concern over the spike in dengue cases observed in the past five weeks, suggesting seasonal factors or inadequate vector control measures may be contributing to the escalation. Dengue transmission typically peaks during warmer months when mosquito populations proliferate.
The provincial health office has urged residents to implement preventive measures, including eliminating standing water where dengue-carrying mosquitoes breed and seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, and joint pain. Community-wide fumigation efforts and public health campaigns are reportedly underway to contain the spread.
