Agusan del Sur taps emergency funds as El Niño ravages crops

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur — Facing mounting agricultural losses and dwindling water supplies, Agusan del Sur is activating emergency funds to combat the impacts of severe El Niño weather patterns across the province.

The provincial government convened with municipal leaders and civil society representatives on October 1 to coordinate disaster response measures. The severe dry spell has destroyed or damaged crops covering more than one-third of the province's agricultural land, threatening food security and farmer livelihoods. Water levels in key watersheds have dropped by nearly one-third, raising concerns about water availability for both farming and household use.

Official discussions focused on both immediate relief measures and longer-term adaptation strategies to mitigate the climate-induced crisis. The mobilization of calamity funds represents a critical step in addressing the emergency, though provincial officials indicated that sustained interventions would be necessary to protect communities through the remainder of the dry season.

The El Niño phenomenon, which typically brings below-normal rainfall across large portions of the Philippines, has intensified water stress in Mindanao and threatens agricultural productivity in the coming months. Local government units are preparing contingency plans for extended drought conditions and potential water rationing measures in affected municipalities.
