AI in schools must preserve human values, Anwar cautions

KUALA LUMPUR — While acknowledging the importance of artificial intelligence and digital technology for education's future, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim cautioned against allowing technological advancement to erode distinctly human qualities in learning environments.

Anwar's remarks reflect growing concerns across the region about balancing digital innovation with educational values centred on critical thinking, creativity, and interpersonal skills. As AI systems increasingly assist in lesson planning, student assessment, and personalised learning, education policymakers face pressure to ensure technology complements rather than replaces human-centric teaching methods.

Malaysia has been gradually integrating digital tools into its education system, with various initiatives aimed at modernising curricula and improving access to learning resources. However, experts have flagged the importance of maintaining teacher-student relationships and fostering soft skills that remain difficult to develop through technology alone.

The Prime Minister's intervention signals that Malaysia's leadership is attuned to both the opportunities and risks presented by rapid AI adoption in schools. Education stakeholders are expected to use the guidance to develop frameworks ensuring technology serves educational goals without compromising the development of essential human competencies.
