AI investment drives global growth amid geopolitical and debt risks

The International Monetary Fund has identified artificial intelligence as a key driver supporting global economic growth in the near term, with substantial investments flowing into AI development and deployment across major economies. This technological momentum is providing a counterbalance to headwinds facing the international economy, helping to sustain demand and productivity gains.

However, the IMF has cautioned that this positive backdrop faces considerable downside risks. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and military conflicts in several regions threaten to disrupt supply chains, increase commodity prices, and divert resources away from productive investment. These disruptions could dampen the growth benefits derived from AI advancement.

The Fund has also raised alarm about rising global debt levels, which are constraining fiscal flexibility for governments and limiting their ability to respond to economic shocks. Elevated debt burdens, combined with higher interest rates, are straining public finances in both developed and developing economies, potentially undermining long-term stability.

The combination of these structural challenges underscores the precarious nature of current economic expansion, according to IMF analysis. Policymakers face pressure to capitalize on AI-driven growth opportunities while simultaneously addressing fiscal sustainability and managing geopolitical risks to ensure a more resilient economic trajectory ahead.
