AI investment surge drives global trade growth, IMF finds
The International Monetary Fund says artificial intelligence-related investment and trade have bolstered global economic growth, with China and India among the key beneficiaries. However, supply chain concentration in specific countries and sectors poses risks to sustained expansion.

Artificial intelligence investments and trade flows have become significant drivers of global economic growth in recent periods, according to analysis from the International Monetary Fund. The technology sector's rapid expansion has created new opportunities for major economies, particularly in Asia, where China and India have captured substantial portions of AI-related commercial activity and investment flows.
The IMF's findings underscore how the AI boom has rippled through international commerce, creating new trade relationships and investment patterns that have supported broader economic momentum worldwide. Emerging markets have benefited notably from the surge in demand for AI-related goods, services, and infrastructure development.
Yet the Fund's assessment also highlights a critical vulnerability in global supply chains. Production capacity and investment for AI-related goods remain heavily concentrated among a limited number of countries and industrial sectors. This concentration creates potential bottlenecks that could constrain future growth if demand outpaces supply or disruptions occur in key producing regions.
Economists warn that diversification of AI supply chains will be essential to sustain the sector's contribution to global growth. Policymakers across Asia-Pacific nations are increasingly focused on developing domestic capabilities to reduce dependence on concentrated supply sources and position themselves as alternative production hubs for AI-related technologies and components.
