AI Technology to Help States Identify Road Accident Hotspots

India is exploring artificial intelligence tools to predict and prevent crashes on national highways as road fatalities continue to surge across the country. The initiative aims to address a persistent public safety crisis that claimed over 177,000 lives in 2024.

India's road safety landscape remains dire, with 4,87,707 accidents reported in 2024 resulting in 1,77,175 deaths, according to available data. The 2023 figures were similarly alarming, with 4,80,583 accidents and 1,72,890 fatalities recorded. These numbers underscore the urgent need for comprehensive intervention strategies across the nation's highway network.

Government authorities are now considering deployment of artificial intelligence systems on national highways to identify high-risk accident zones before incidents occur. The technology would analyze traffic patterns, road conditions, weather data, and historical accident records to predict vulnerable areas and alert state authorities to take preventive measures.

The proposal represents a shift toward data-driven road safety management, allowing states to allocate resources more effectively to accident-prone locations. By identifying crash risk factors in advance, authorities could implement targeted interventions such as improved signage, road repairs, traffic management adjustments, and enhanced enforcement.

State governments would play a crucial role in implementing recommendations generated by the AI systems. The approach aims to complement existing road safety initiatives while addressing the mounting human and economic toll of accidents on India's highways. Success of the initiative would depend on coordinated action between central authorities, state transport departments, and highway management agencies.
