Companies including ClickPost, Shiprocket, Unicommerce and Zippee are rolling out AI-powered systems designed to cut return-to-origin (RTO) rates—a persistent operational headache—by as much as 20 percent.
The technology is being deployed across three critical operational areas. AI algorithms are optimizing customer communications to reduce failed delivery attempts, automating courier allocation to match shipments with the most suitable logistics partners, and enhancing last-mile delivery operations through predictive analytics and route optimization. These interventions address some of the fundamental inefficiencies that drive up costs for D2C businesses operating in India's complex delivery landscape.
The RTO metric has become a key performance indicator in India's e-commerce and direct-to-consumer sectors, where failed deliveries, incorrect addresses and customer unavailability create significant friction.
