Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games officially opens despite pre-event complications

The opening ceremony marked the formal start of the Asian Games, which will run until October 4 and is expected to showcase the region's sporting talent across a comprehensive programme of events. Around 11,000 competitors from 45 nations and territories are participating in the biennial Games, one of the world's largest multi-sport competitions by athlete participation.

The Games come after the host city and organizing committee navigated several challenges in the lead-up to the event. Despite these complications during the preparation phase, organizers successfully moved forward with the opening ceremony and commencement of competition.

Aichi prefecture, centred on the major city of Nagoya, was selected to host the Games, bringing the continental competition to Japan's central region. The event represents a significant sporting and economic undertaking for the host region, with athletes competing across numerous disciplines throughout the three-week competition period.

The Asian Games serve as a key platform for athletes from across South, Southeast, East and Central Asia to compete at the highest continental level, with the competition also functioning as a qualifying event for various international sporting bodies.
