AIIB to expand water infrastructure financing in India amid drought concerns

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is preparing to increase its financing for water infrastructure and policy reforms across India, responding to growing concerns over rainfall shortages and drought risks intensified by El Niño weather patterns.

With monsoon rainfall deficits widening across the country, the multilateral development bank has identified water management and infrastructure as priority investment areas. The move comes as India faces mounting pressure to strengthen its water security amid climate variability and rising water stress in key agricultural and industrial regions.

AIIB has already approved $13.8 billion in financing for India across various sectors since its inception. The planned expansion in water sector lending reflects the bank's strategic focus on supporting critical infrastructure that addresses both immediate water supply challenges and longer-term sustainability concerns.

The scaling up of water financing is expected to encompass both physical infrastructure projects—such as irrigation systems, water treatment facilities, and storage infrastructure—and policy-level reforms aimed at improving water resource management and conservation practices.

As El Niño conditions continue to influence weather patterns across Asia, development institutions are increasingly prioritizing investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and water security in vulnerable regions.
