Air India CEO cites Pakistan airspace closure as operational challenge

Air India Chief Executive Tewolde GebreMariam stated that geopolitical constraints in the region are necessitating operational adjustments for the airline. The closure of Pakistani airspace has prompted the carrier to modify its existing route network to navigate around the restrictions.

GebreMariam characterised the current challenges stemming from Middle Eastern tensions and airspace limitations as temporary impediments rather than structural obstacles to the airline's expansion plans. The CEO emphasised that while immediate adjustments are required, they do not fundamentally alter the company's strategic vision.

Airlines operating across South and Southeast Asia have faced recurring disruptions since Pakistan periodically restricts its airspace during periods of regional instability. These closures typically extend flight times and increase operational costs as carriers are forced to chart alternative routes, particularly for services connecting India with Europe and the Middle East.

Air India has undertaken significant expansion initiatives in recent years, including fleet modernisation and route additions. The airline's management has signalled its intention to maintain this growth momentum despite the present headwinds, viewing the airspace constraints as cyclical rather than permanent obstacles to its network development strategy.
