Air quality deteriorates across Malaysia as 34 stations hit unhealthy levels

Air quality across Malaysia deteriorated markedly on Wednesday, triggering health concerns as monitoring stations recorded sharply elevated pollution levels nationwide.

Data released by the Department of Environment showed 34 stations logged readings in the "Unhealthy" category of the Air Pollution Index (API), with the majority clustered in Sarawak and Selangor. The two states bore the brunt of the pollution spike, registering the highest concentration of affected monitoring points across the country.

The unhealthy air quality readings prompted warnings for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor activities and exercise precautions. Health authorities advised residents in affected areas to wear protective masks and monitor their symptoms closely.

Investigations into the cause of the rapid deterioration were underway, with preliminary indications pointing to a combination of local emissions and transboundary pollution. Meteorological conditions, including atmospheric stagnation and wind patterns, may have contributed to the accumulation of pollutants at ground level.

Environmental officials stated they would continue monitoring air quality developments and advised the public to check real-time API readings through official channels before planning outdoor activities.
